We believe all art, technology, and politics should be human-centered and designed with humanity in mind. To that end, we believe these three fundamental parts of our modern life can and should complement the human experience. We aim to slow ourselves in a world of hurry, pursue curiosity where it may lead, and cultivate our ability to think critically about the stories of our time.

We're an exclusively online publication that writes, encourages, and elevates pieces and thinkers which keep humanity the central theme and focus. We seek to engage our readers with longer pieces of depth and to challenge our audience to think –– the type of thinking that occurs in periods of reflection, meaningful dialogue or solitude.

In the litany of global myths, the Hart and the Cur symbolize a variety of things. Deer represent freedom, spiritual piety, or compassion. Dogs represent domestication, friendship, and civilization. In our observations and writing we want to capture both the wildness of nature and the benefits of civilization. This challenges us to keep a clear understanding of humanity’s history and future.

Our Mission

Matt Hartley is a husband, father, son, and brother. He grew up on the west coast, lives on the east coast, and once stopped at a gas station in Idaho with a sign that read "the middle of nowhere" (it was). He's worked as a Marine intelligence officer, writer, and golf course cart boy. He struggles with an addiction to college football. He became a reader after receiving Louis L'Amour's memoir, Education of a Wandering Man
